The firing wasn't based on the assumption of future exponential growth in my opinion. The firing based on what I have observed was based on being able to have less people do the same amount of work as more people would. So, let's say you have a department of 100 support folks taking phone calls, emails and so forth. Now add in some LLMs with access to the knowledge base and the ability to format emails or respond to chat or even live chat with a caller to some extent. In this hypothetical, you might not need 100 support personnel to handle the same amount of incoming support requests. Maybe you can get by with 80 instead of 100. Now, you could be a good boss and lighten the load on your staff. OR, you fire 20 and pocket the difference minus what it costs to run the LLMs. Heck, now you can run your support lines 24x7 since the LLMs don't need to sleep.
