I'm not sure if the tech industry was ever ethical, but there was a hacker ethos that seems to have gone missing. Now we're leading everyone down the AI primrose path. Non-tech people are so enamored with the whiz-bang slickness of it all, they don't question the accuracy, reliability, or sustainability of it. Safety critical fields like medicine and engineering — which should require strict standards of correctness — are lining up because they trust the tech industry, and we say it's all good baby! Meanwhile we knowingly push on to the next, even more subtly broken model. We're working on the next Therac-25, only it's so opaque and byzantine that we might not convince anyone else for a long time. Anyone with any ethos left has either left the industry, or is powerless in the face of speculative investment capital.
