I mean, industrial robots are "dumb", but with the right programmation they replace millions of jobs, and they can also appear to have some kind of autonomy. With LLMs, it's programmation one step further, but this is still algorithmic. The same could be said about many technologic advancements. The debate seems to be about conscious or sentient AI, not about the performance of the algorithms, even if such algorithms are trained rather than hardcoded. But you also are right about our own nature, more specifically about the conscious reflexive self, that "pilot" who believes it is a thing rather than an activity. You may then head to other subreddits to find interesting debates about the nature of our own consciousness and subjective experience. I have my own convictions, others may disagree and have other convictions...
