the thing is, nobody really knows 'how it works'. They know how it was trained, how it was created, but nobody knows what is going on under the hood. Sentience and consciousness have not even been universally defined, many consider both to simply be an illusion. For that matter, nobody knows how human consciousness and thought really works. An AI or an LLM does not need to do everything that a human does however, or even if it can do similar things, it does not need to do them in the same way in order for it to have the same utility. Do you know why you say the things you say, do you know that you are conscious? I don't know that you are conscious. I don't know that my wife is conscious - I know she talks. LLMs have easily been capable of passing the touring test for many years now. I think its arrogant to think that LLMs are just complex computer programs if you don't think that humans are just complex computer programs.
