With the right training/education, a single young person can use an LLM to supplement the skills they lack to spin up a business. In the past a brilliant idea would get locked behind a a huge list of skills that required experience and a team to implement. Even a very bright and hard working individual would not have enough time to research, learn and apply what was needed.
I suspect for those who seek it, there will be more avenues to escape the rat race. For those who want a job, it will be harder to get paid to warm a desk.
All businesses have and will continue to have “unmodeled” issues that an LLM will not discover or address. Customers don’t know what they want. Suppliers don’t do what’s asked. Sales is needed to connect solutions to problems. Regional issues are not well understood. People will continue be the glue to fix these kinds of issues - just different skills and experience will be useful and rewarded.
In the past 3 years, these new tools have enabled me to not hire and still get jobs done in software and physical solutions. They suck in a lot of ways. However, I am moving faster and covering more of a tech stack than would have been possible 5 years ago. I suspect it will continue to improve.
For young people, I’m working with interns and full time engineers. For the interns, I’m suggesting they learn how to learn using the new tools, learn how to detect poor answers, and expand their skills. I see turmoil ahead, but a bright future for those who figure out how to apply it.
