The company I work for recently put me on a team dedicated to learning about how AI can help us and one of the things I discovered is that the available technology is way farther ahead of what the average person believes to be the case.
I believe if you asked the average person a question like "How many years away are we from AI being able to do X?" then the average answer you get would be quite far off from the truth. For example, there's already AI models that can consistently generate images that a human couldn't tell were AI generated. For example, there's already AI models that can generate video that can fool humans. There's already AI models that can create code that solves complicated software engineering tasks, including an entire task starting from a ticket all the way through to git commit.
Also, anecdotally, I've been using ChatGPT as a replacement for google searching for awhile now and it's been amazing. It solves so many of the emerging issues I've had with the degradation of google searching and I'm finding myself getting the answers I want basically every single time much faster than I would from browsing through google search results. Not hallucinations either... actual legit answers with citations to the source content used to generate the answer.
If you're someone who think that we're "years away from AI being relevant" then you're so so so wrong. It's already the best technology for a TON of tasks including ones that are relevant to your own life.
