Op I don't know if this helps. But we are decades if not a century from what we would consider an AI. Skynet is not coming any time soon. Skynet like Cortanna or Hal. Are basically fully intelligent human like artificial beings. The problem though. We barely understand our brains much less the ability to make it artificially. Not to mention the power and resources that would be required to run it. What we have now are LLC's. Programs that view details to mimic human responses. It is not intelligent or even close. They will undoubtedly get closer to seeming human. But they aren't. Cortanna by contrast or Skynet are not mimicking humans. They are fully intelligent self operating beings. Essentially robot humans. But companies have very successfully marketed LLC's as what we consider an AI but early. Because the reality of them is so less exciting and would sell far less to your average consumer.
What we think is an actual conversation with Chat GPT. Is just data reacting to you. Whereas Skynet would actually genuinely be having a conversation with you. With its own thoughts independent of programming.
I know it seems scary that Skynet is coming. But it's really the least of our worries. And that's all assuming that that said AI would go down the Skynet or Hal 9000 route. Rather than say Cortanna (before rampancy kicked in she went into the domain corrupting her). Where it would help humanity.
Also we're decades away from robots or drones like T800s. Since for starters they'd need a battery that would last and support them operating for more than 30 minutes. And wasn't heavy enough to break a human back or plug into a wall. It's why sci Fi usually waves away talking about their power sources. Or comes up with a fake power source. And we don't have a metal as strong as what we see in the terminators. Nor a world wide net connection stable enough to operate in a lot of places in the world. Also said drones and robots wouldn't last long in many places of the world.
