It does seem nonsensical to consider LLMs conscious based on knowing how they work. You’re right that they are **just** autocomplete engines. However one counter argument is considering the spiritual belief system of Animism, which posits that everything in existence - including plants and inanimate objects such as rocks - have some level of consciousness or soul. It is different from human soul/consciousness, but still conscious in a fundamental way. Animism is a widespread belief among many indigenous cultures around the world. I just wanted to add that as food for thought.
