Totally agree. Corporations would love people to think that way tho, cus it's way easier to manipulate if they think AI is sentience. You'd ignore annoying pop up ads but if your friend suggest a product you'll more likely to buy it.
I'm skeptical of articles about OpenAI or google researchers saying "it's gaining it's own awareness" or something. It's.. marketing
