Personally, neoliberalism per se isn't the problem. The problem is how the American corporate system is set up, and how the American democratic system has been corrupted by super PACs and lobbyists. A lot of the manufacturing jobs we talk about that the US shed are low manufacturing jobs. And a lot of the jobs for higher end got replaced by robotics and automation. The current problem is that the C suite is not incentivized to look long term but short term gains. Even the gains are not productive because it's not looking at overall business health but share prices and P/E ratios. You can't build and lead an industry that way. Then we have a lost decade from 2010s to 2020s where major industry changes weren't in actual value producing apps or tech, but small innovations. Celebrating AirBnB or Uber or Instagram is a mistake. While their valuations are great for bankers, long term it doesn't move the needle. While the US was celebrating record IPOs from AirBnB, the Chinese were figuring out how to set up a competitive marketplace for EV cars and battery tech. So, not neoliberalism, but the US needs a complete reform in government (boot out the lobbyists) and a judicial change where the C suite can't be sued for long term business goals at the cost of short term stock growth
