I was chatting with my OSS office at my company about this, and he rolled in our lawyer because he thought it was a pretty interesting topic. Basically, like anything around licensing it's complicated. Can the software be open source that runs it? Sure. But what about the model? How was it trained? What was it trained on? Can you prove what was used for training materials. For folks in the industry, think SBOMs. How do you do an SBOM for an AI model, properly? Short answer is... you probably can't.
