I mean, the idea that we can always know fact from fiction is an illusion, anyway. People who live in cultures centered on oral tradition tend to be comfortable with the idea that stories change in the telling, and anyone could be making shit up. It's really not until written transmission becomes the main mode of learning that you see the shift toward certainty. But with the democratization of narrative that comes with social media: before, we felt like were able to trust authority to give us objective information (which, there's no such thing as value-free information, anyway). Now we're coming back to the point where we recognize anyone can say anything. I think this creates a crisis because we're not used to thinking that way anymore, and we haven't learned how to judge information because we're used to having it spoon-fed to us. Plus I think the sheer scale of our networks makes the stakes higher, maybe. With bots... I think people will wise-up, at least somewhat, and I also think a lot of people will just start leaving the internet. Or maybe more like, there'll be even more of a shift to audio-visual media, and to a more off-the-cuff style there. Because if it's scripted, hey, could've been written by a bot. I think to some extent we'll stop caring if it's bots. Like you know how we take for granted that a lot of shit on like amitheasshole is made up? But a lot of people don't really care and see it more as an impetus for debate. I also like making my best judgement about whether it's real. Don't get me wrong, it kinda bums me out to see so much AI, but... I'm interested to see where it goes.
