Well, OpenAI was a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of AI technology. But OpenAI got bought by Microsoft, which is, to your point, a publicly traded corporation.
So they didn't have a bottom line incentive before, but now they do.
And one could argue that was the point all along. The nonprofit was the larval form incubating a product that would eventually be bought by a PTC.
