So I got to preview ghost at AUSA two years ago. The robots (at the time) were not able to carry any kind of standard firearm or weapon and certainly couldn't use them effectively. Ghosts bots were small and couldn't take the kickback of a standard rifle. A company called SWORD international was working on a nonstandard, custom made rifle system which again was very ineffective in the testing at the time and was literally a rifle mounted to the top of the bot (https://youtu.be/Mnnyixbpnv8?si=p8-Sn6tKTcOyXboQ). I have seen the videos of dog robots using aks and such, that wasn't Ghost to my knowledge and I'd be surprised if they were effective besides propaganda on youtube.
The main purposes of these, as described to me by one of the presenters were bomb detection, search and rescue, and surveillance (as described in the article). All of these were remote controlled by soldiers on the ground or by a remote unit with heavy and complex controllers, no Xbox controller here. They are cumbersome to transport, battery is meh, movement was impressive but nothing like black mirror. Think battle bots but more sophisticated. Overall these robots were expensive, fragile with lots of fragile instruments and had very limited use cases. Again that was 2 years ago.
I don't pretend to understand how they've evolved, robotics is not my field, I just saw the demo at a military conference but I'd personally take this particular concern with a grain of salt. As an AI hobbiest and a military contractor, AI does have some very concerning use cases. Robot dogs is not on my list for at least the near future.
This (https://youtu.be/PrrgP4I7WT4?si=aYh2BeCAmnUD3vuT) is from more recently than when I saw them. They look like they have a bit more visual tech added but the movement is about the same. Its slow, expensive, and again cumbersome especially after the additions. Hardly at black mirror level guys
