Let's say you have 10 million people in a country, and 5 million of them do some kind of office or knowledge work, and the other 5 million do vocational trades, manual labor, etc.
Now imagine you made 5 million knowledge workers completely obsolete. That's it. There's no more work for them. AI has done everything. There's no upskilling or any other chance these people could ever get another job doing knowledge work unless they are going to spend huge money to get a college degree to be able to build and maintain AI.
Now what?
Let's say 2 million of that 5 million run out and learn vocational trade work, now. The other 5 million that we're making a decent living from it because of the shortage of workers are finding their wages going down and their opportunities dwindling because there's more competition than ever before. Plus you still have a lot of people out of work with no income, so they're not calling on these people to come fix things or build things.
Meanwhile, everyone is still expected to go out and make a living and pay for things. However, there's no viable way anymore for them to do this.
So not only do you have a lot of people that are completely unable to survive now on the old system, but also the companies that may be dependent on those people to be their customers and revenue stream suddenly cut off.
I mean, imagine suddenly if all the streaming services lost customers like crazy because now they have no income and can't afford that luxury. Imagine if companies like Apple and Google see huge drops in their sales because everybody is hanging on to their old devices because they can't afford to buy new ones. Imagine how many food services, restaurants, and grocery stores would be struggling because nobody has money to go buy anything, or worse they're going out and stealing because they have no choice.
Imagine how much more dangerous cities and towns become when people who are starving in desperate turn to crime in order to survive.
