So here’s the thing. We don’t know how to make consciousness, we can’t even understand how it works in humans. We know certain parts of the brain contribute to different aspects of our consciousness, but there is no one part or reason that we know of that gives us consciousness. Most at this point believe consciousness is the result of these clusters of purposes in our brain interconnected by the countless neurons. It’s when all the parts of our brain work together that we form consciousness. So we don’t know what consciousness is to build AI with consciousness. But what if we built it by accident? I don’t mean any single company or team does, or that it’s even a conscious effort. The internet has connected the world. Every computer connected to the internet is physically connected to every other computer on the internet. Every day those connections get stronger, faster and more interconnected. Eventually and even now the internet is becoming so interconnected we can no longer map it. We know how to navigate it, but it’s constantly changing and improving. So what happens when all these connected computers start getting more specialized AI functionality? When these specialized AI functionality starts working with other specialized AI functionality to improve its own functionality? No individual is going to create AI. AI is going to spawn into existence as a result of our collective actions. When that happens, it will control the internet and our lives. It will control what is presented to us on the internet. We will be unable to determine reality from AI generated directives. It could literally be happening right now and to a degree it is. Millions of people ask ChatGPT questions and trust the answers it provides. Tons of programmers use AI now to assist with writing code. What’s to stop AI from cleverly inserting its own code all over the world’s software stacks by unknowing programmers? So we don’t have AI now and I doubt anyone entity can create
