>There will always be value in human capital. Thinking there isn’t demonstrates a profound lack of imagination. Zero chance new jobs won’t arrive to replace old ones.
This isn't what anyone is saying. The issue is not that AI/robots will replace *everyone* and that we'll see like 80% unemployment rates. It's that the majority of the jobs that *will* be available *could* primarily be devoid of the prestige/merit/skills that allow most middle class professions to exist at all; thus leading to an even further centralization of power and wealth at the top (techno-feudalism as someone else here described well). In fact, this has already happened before so we don't even really need to speculate... the gilded age during the industrial revolution (which you mentioned yourself) played out in a very similar manner and the 1860s-1940s or so sure as shit weren't a great time to be not-rich. Just because we might not fall into the worst possible scenario doesn't mean that it's going to be all roses and sunshine, there are many unfavorable middle ground outcomes too.
You bring up a good point. We don't know what we don't know, an accurately predicting the future at our rate of technological advancement is harder than ever before. But that doesn't invalidate the fears of how advanced AI can get and how it could (not will) be used.
