I’m not sure about the US specifically, but I’ve done some moonlighting on the side of my main job, and one of those jobs included helping to build a train a neural net to detect friend vs. foe on a video feed, as well as determining whether a subject was wounded and it was then tied into a control system for a turret system. Talking to the other teams working on it, it had full automation capabilities, which could be enabled in times of war.
