There's a lot at stake even beyond this. In the US, we cannot even reign in the technology/media that already exists (advertisements, social media, misinformation via "entertainment" news shows, etc...). We'll have every one of these problems which already exists in other media/technology forms in AI as it becomes more and more common...except it will be way more efficient than all other media forms—plus the added concern of future autonomy. I do not think companies are being transparent with how advanced some of their creations currently are, and their guardrails are not as effective as they want to believe they are. The danger in this is that humanity may lose control of technology, and the direction of the world takes in less than a decade.
