> What's the difference between you asking an AI to go make a picture of a woman wearing hiking gear in a valley, and you asking an artist to make a picture of a woman wearing hiking gear in a valley?
What indeed!
> In both cases you had an image in your head, and ask something or someone to go create that picture. But if you ask a photographer to go out and create that picture, does that make you a photographer now?
How is it relevant whether that makes me a photographer?
If I am a director, do I not own copyright to the films I direct, even if they are made entirely with public domain materials that are no longer under copyright?
> Are you now the artist who created that piece of work?
> Should you be signing it, and expose it in galleries under your name?
A director is a form of artist, yes. And they are credited for their films.
> In both cases, you are just commissioning and prompting an art piece. You didn't create it. You didn't paint, draw, or go take a picture of it. Even if you had a mental image of what it might look like.
There are entire industries which involve people who did not paint a single stroke or compose a single note, and who themselves never touched a camera or even editing software, owning the rights to the films and games that they directed or designed.
> In the same way that someone who told Jeff Bezos that maybe they should go try to sell stuff online, doesn't make that person the owner of Amazon.
That's because a method of business can't be patented. And methods of business don't even fall under copyright.
If I were to create a visual novel game using AI art, and I wrote a story... Maybe I wouldn't own the copyright to the art. But I absolutely would own the right to the story I told.
Though this is getting off the original subject a bit. which is whether or not acting as a director to "frame" an AI image is itself creative input.
And as far as that goes, I say it is. It is I who decided I wanted a woman
