“According to dude-whose-job-is-super-at-risk-right-now, their team is doing great work.” But seriously, I work in marketing analytics for a tech company and am constantly combing through google paid search campaign ROI models and all I can think of is that this is google attempting to embrace the tech destined to replace them. Their whole business is paid search ads and their zero-click “info cards” siphon traffic from websites so people never leave google, thus furthering corporate dependency on paying google to remain relevant in SERP. This chat style tech will replace search and I for one would immediately stop using any chat service if I found out the results were paid shills for advertisers. I don’t see how this doesn’t greatly diminish their primary business engine.
