One token at a time, to be pedantic. More importantly, the latest research shows that models like GPT-4 do exhibit a very limited capability to create "mental maps" and plan ahead towards a goal. It's not much, but it's still incredibly impressive and we don't really have a clue what causes these emergent capabilities in an LLM.
