[Another Arrest, and Jail Time, Due to a Bad Facial Recognition Match](https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/29/technology/facial-recognition-misidentify-jail.html)
>In February 2019, Nijeer Parks was accused of shoplifting candy and trying to hit a police officer with a car at a Hampton Inn in Woodbridge, N.J. The police had identified him using facial recognition software, even though he was 30 miles away at the time of the incident.
>Mr. Parks spent 10 days in jail and paid around $5,000 to defend himself. In November 2019, the case was dismissed for lack of evidence.
guy spent 10 days in jail while the people watching him thinks he tried to kill a cop. Cost him 5k. not to mention lost work time, and stress on family with him gone. and you know since the was thought to be someone who attacked a cop, he wouldnt be treated well in prison. even if they dont outright break the law, they are going to drag their feet on everything. You are going to get the worst plate of food out of the stack.. etc.
and the darker your skin is the more likely you will be a victim of bad facial recognition.
Unfortunately most of this is still legal in the US, partially because we only have a single party that wants to actually govern and another that wants to block absolutely everything the other does.
