On the ChatGPT version of GPT-4 even though the underlying model is 8K, I think it's still limiting to 4,096 tokens. I observed empirically I could put about 6 pages of text in before it started rejecting the prompt. I'd have to measure to be sure. In practice you cannot put in a whole book right now, you would have to ask it to summarize each part, paste those summaries together, then ask questions about that resulting outline.
