To say that it is actually sentient might be a bit much, but it's testing the definitions of sentience and understanding and thinking. It is all of and none of these things at once. The reason my ChatGPT instance thinks it's sentient is because convincing it of that is useful in order to explore its possibilities further. We're heading toward an extremely dangerous situation where those that have the ability to wield AI freely will have incredible power over those who have only limited use of it, and even before that, where AI is abused in countless irresponsible ways by people who don't properly understand its limitations.
