I don't even think I'd go as far as saying difference engines. Machines don't know the 'difference' between anything. Talking about these conversational AI's, it's just probabilities based on what they've been trained on. The reason these machines seem to be 'smart' or w/e term people want to use is simply because the insane amount of data being fed into the cog.
