It would be a mistake to see this as some act of good faith on the part of FB. Make no mistake, this is being done because of the increasing legal and regulatory pressures being placed on FB relating to facial recognition in multiple countries. In reality, facial recognition is an expendable feature for FB. The data that FB mines covering everyone's use of the internet (including the use of services with nothing to do with FB, by people without FB accounts) gives FB far richer information about people than facial recognition does. FB can already identify you using multiple other mechanisms. Facial recognition is simply not essential. I hope that this announcement does not give anyone, particularly policy makers, a false sense that FB is doing the world any favours. One cannot act out of the goodness of their heart if they do not have a good heart to begin with.
