In ground heat pumps in the north is frequently not viable. It'd be extremely expensive to dig deep enough to put in the pipes, involving blasting rock. If your lucky you can use a two well system but usually there's too much iron etc. to make that viable. I'd love to do it myself but it'd take a couple lifetimes for the benefit to outweigh the cost. I do know they're working on ones that just involve drilling one hole and putting a coil in that and if the tech and cost for that can come down and be efficient enough...
