At least according to [this](https://www.statista.com/statistics/622705/japan-suicide-number-per-100-000-inhabitants-by-gender/), the rates for Japanese men and women have both been decreasing for the last decade, and this jump is within the ordinary level of variation, and in fact was at a *minimum* of that variation for women in 2019 (all rates per 100k):
Men: 33.7 in 2011, heading down and always above 24 until the last three years: 23.2, 22.9, 22.9.
Women: 14.8 in 2011 and always above 11 until the last five years: 10.4, 10, 10.1, **9.4, 10.9**
Bold marks this purportedly giant increase, the steeper right hand of a ‘W’. So 2020 was about as high above the mean for the last 5 years as 2019 was below it, and is in keeping with the same fluctuation. So this is massively cherry-picking the data. Now sure, we can discuss this and see why here, and coronavirus may be at play. In the U.K., there was a far sharper increase for men from 2017-2019 than for women, and little change over 2020 from a preliminary BMJ analysis.
And yet this is the third article I have seen hit the top in the last few months that specifically frames suicide as a female issue. Why?
Purely small sample size? Let’s be honest and not pretend like there isn’t a massive culture of assuming that only women are victims in life. We can honestly discuss issues that disproportionately affect women like rape, harassment, etc. without being disingenuous.
For every article that hits the top about how men commit suicide *three times as often* worldwide, and more in *every country* (and all these suicides being news in themselves), there are a couple that hit the top asking, effectively ‘Why are women killing themselves only HALF as often as men in country X? Women must get the raw end of the stick there!’
For every ten articles talking about an epidemic of murder of women, there are very few discussing the four times higher rate at which men get murdered. (‘Hey, most murderers are men, so male murder
