[Derek Lowe is far *far* more familiar with the topic, and has an extensive write-up on why there are only a few facilities in the world capable of producing a mRNA vaccine right now](https://blogs.sciencemag.org/pipeline/archives/2021/02/02/myths-of-vaccine-manufacturing). The basic summary is that there is a critical step, requiring custom machinery. Pfizer, Moderna, BioNTech, CureVac have pretty much used up the world's capacity of that production step... as well as even the capacity to build more of the necessary machinery.
