I get that these arguments have altruistic motive but they are just not rooted in reality. All these biopharma companies developing vaccines, as well as medical device companies that developed testing have poured so much money into R&D to develop these products, in an absurdly short amount of time. The team I worked on developing antigen testing, worked 24 hours a week, seven days a week split into two teams 8am-8pm and 8pm-8am for 4 months. It was grueling. R&D is tough, stressful and demanding work. Patented products are a way to recoup R&D cost at a minimum, hopefully turn profit on a product, and then pay all the employees competitive wages to recruit the best talent for the company. I get it, pandemic is bad and everyone is sick of it, but if we screw over all the companies who busted ass developing these products, they won't do it again. Worse, the talent that made it possible, will leave and find employment else wear. You don't get top of the line technology for free.
