It's really just not that simple.
The patent problem.
If you don't protect your patent, you don't have a patent.
Should medicines be patents then?
Unfortunately yes. We all wish we lived in a world where everyone got everything they needed, when they needed it. But medicines only get made through reaserch and cutting edge technology. Someone has to pay for that.
Usually companies make large sums of money from drugs they develop. Most of the covid vaccines are sold at cost.
The construction problem.
Most places on earth simply don't have the infrastructure or supply chains needed to make the vaccine. They certainly don't have the expertise.
Simply handing over the design wouldn't change that.
Should more places be invested in, so that they can make them?
Yes. But someone has to pay for that. And it's not a quick thing to do. For eg, the phizer vaccine is made using a fatty lipid from a single company in Yorkshire. That company is helping to tool up sites in the EU. So even the cutting edge needs help from other cutting edge tech.
The hard to make problem.
Even if you have all the gear, all the blueprints, all the bits and pieces. It's still super hard to make. It's a biological process with uncertain yeilds. It needs to be tweeked and constantly worked on.
Giving someone a top notch kitchen, won't guarantee good cakes. And the cakes need to be perfect, otherwise they don't work.
