I think the thing people don't seem to realize is * the concept of "exponential growth" (things like facial-recognition don't grow on a linear line. .the grow on an exponential curve) * the various algorithms used in facial-recognition are spreading fast.. including in things like self-driving cars, Robotic OSes (such as ROS or manufacturers like Boston Dynamics) and other platforms where "computer-vision" is a steadily increasingly used thing. Android and iOS have a variety of different underlying API's for Machine Learning. (Apple for example: https://developer.apple.com/machine-learning/ .. has API's for Vision, Sound, Speech and Natural Language,. and those are all supported back to iOS 11 from 2 years ago) Those things are also developing fast. The new M1 Apple Silicon SOC,. includes a Neural Engine with 16 cores. It doesn't take much for someone to write a Facial Recognition tool for that. and share it in an open-source way.
