> Never in human history had we defeated a contagious illness through herd immunity without a vaccine.
Oh so the Spanish flu just decided to pack its bags due to being tired?
Do you not get that even at 40-50% you get a HUGE drop-off in spreading? It's exactly the same as a measurement put in place. It doesn't stop the spreading to zero, it just greatly reduces it. However if you keep lining up these Swiss cheese slices you get to a low number.
When you have low amounts of spreading it means the hospitals are doing fine, it means the economy can keep functioning in a fairly normal manner. And no, you don't need to try to aim for herd immunity by getting everyone infected at the same time. The Spanish flu took ~3 years.
Overall, the issue isn't if herd immunity works or not. It can work but it doesn't matter. The issue lies in simply controlling the spreading. If a vaccine comes along, great! (even though it will take months and months to get it to most people) If not, going for herd immunity slowly is not a bad idea.
