Can someone give me a good rationale why facial recognition should be banned? I’ve done some surface level reading on google and the main arguments are “it is a violation of privacy” and “human fallibility means it could be used for nefarious purposes.” Like one, is this really such a bad thing to have in public places? You don’t have privacy in public. I don’t see how it violates a person’s civil liberties directly. The human fallibility point is more compelling to me, but that argument could be used about a lot of systems where people are trusted (like national security and deadly military equipment). Perhaps I’m being short-sighted. Anyone have examples of how banning facial recognition is truly a good thing? I personally believe that people don’t want to acknowledge that our justice system is flawed in assuming humans can always follow laws at all times. Good people break little laws everyday, and mass surveillance would reveal wrongdoings constantly. People should just admit they don’t want mass surveillance because they do illegal/weird stuff a lot.
