Koalas specialize in eating eucalyptus trees, one of the most common tree species found in Australia ever since the vegetation shift 40,000 years ago occurred from both climate change and human interactions during that time. Eucalyptus trees are allelopathic, they exude toxins into the soil to "poison" it for other types of tree and plants species in order to prevent competition (many types of trees do this across the planet). When koalas feed on these trees, it puts pressure on them by helping to clear the tree canopy of shade and forces the trees to divert resources away from their roots. These work in tandem to promote disturbance for new vegetation growth which then promotes biodiversity as more insects come to feed on the new species of plants growing. When the insects increase, so do the birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals that feed on them and each other. Although koalas aren't considered an ecological engineer in the normal tense, they're the only major macro organisms on the continent that can suppress eucalyptus monoculture in the bush.
