I worked in the polling station on Brexit vote day, and despite some of the comments saying that bigotry didn’t have anything to do with it, I viewed this actual interaction between a woman and her child. ‘You choose this one, you don’t get a school place. You choose this one, we kick all the foreigners out and you get a school place’. We aren’t allowed to discuss politics or voting within the polling station, so I couldn’t leap across the table and slap her silly for being such a moron. But those are the kind of votes we were up against, and the kind of mindset that pro-brexit campaigners really preyed upon. Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers.
