I don't know a lot about American politics, but I get the general impression that our Liberal Party isn't quite as right wing as your Republican Party, but they are definitely equivalent.
The Australian Liberal Party gets its name from economic liberalism, whereas the idea of "liberals", generally speaking, refers to social liberalism. There's no underlying economic principle for it (as far as I know), but it just so happens that in Australia the Liberal Party is our mainstream conservative party.
