The UK, through Brexit, and the US, through trump, both seem to have decided to withdraw their nations from the post-WW2 global order they helped build and establish. After WW2 the western democracies built out a new world order that had as one of the main goals, no more world wars. Some of the hallmarks of this order are things that seem commonplace or even inevitable, but was the result of generations of focused effort. Some of the main ideas behind this new order were the promotion of democracy, based on the observation that democracies rarely go to war with each other, promotion of international trade, based on the observation that trading partners rarely go to war with each other, and the promotion of multi-lateral organizations to help keep the peace, things like NATO, WHO, IMF, and the UN, to give nations an alternative from going to war. The US and UK have both championed these policies for nearly a century, but recently we’ve seen an abrupt about face from both nations. Both nations have moved their focus from the international sphere, building and maintaining the post-WW2 world order, to focus more heavily on nationalistic concerns. The UK decided to separate from the EU, and trump laid out his vision for America with the “America First” doctrine and has made moves in both public and private to reduce America’s support for the multi-lateral organizations established to maintain the post-WW2 order, including wanting to pull out of NATO / claims that NATO is ineffective or unneeded, defunding the WHO, refusing to seat board members to the IMF, etc. The very odd thing about all this is. Why? It would make sense for the US and the UK to want to dismantle or alter the post-WW2 order if it put them at a disadvantage, but most scholars agree that this arrangement was largely beneficial.
