Interestingly from what I read this virus in particular is very resistant to mutation.
The most common argument I've heard for maintaining practices to limit the spread of infection is reduce the medical service and supply demand. As the number of deaths can stay lower if those that got serious cases were able to access proper medical care (ventilators as the prime example).
