For everyone who says "algorithms/math can't be racist", I remind you of the old saying, "Garbage in, garbage out." If your algorithm doesn't recognize black faces *and you say, "This is acceptable, ship it."* then your algorithm will exhibit a racial bias. And this "meh, works fine for white people" attitude is a problem for more than just facial recognition: > Sharkey said: “There are so many biases happening now, **from job interviews to welfare to determining who should get bail and who should go to jail**. It is quite clear that we really have to stop using decision algorithms, and I am someone who has always been very light on regulation and always believed that it stifles innovation. I think we've all been in a situation where we need to interact with some bureaucracy and have been told a version of "sorry, that's just our policy" and noted that these policies always seem to benefit the company and not us. They can claim that their policy is neutral and objective, but anyone who knows how the world works knows this isn't true. Policies, and software, are written by humans with agendas, restrictions, and compromises, and people with power and privilege ensure that at the end they are the ones who benefit.
