Funny story about the home gardens in the US. The US shot itself in the foot real bad with Japanese-American internment during WW2; their farms, which the entire intent behind internment was to steal and redistribute to whites, were responsible for a massive amount of "truck crops" shipped from California. The white farmers that took over (many of them lacking the lifelong and/or generational knowledge of agriculture that the Japanese immigrants brought) underproduced so much that the "victory gardens" developed during WW1 were damn near a necessity this time. Worse, the state of California shortened the school years so that the children could be used as farm labor, even on farms their families didn't operate.
