Data is the red herring of the internet in my opinion. Few people truly care about privacy and many enjoy the benefits of personalization that comes with sophisticated data systems. Disinformation is the real threat and reason we have Trump and Brexit and growing right wing nationalism. That disinformation could proliferate even without data targeting being in the equation because the root problem is platforms are enjoying the money they make by allowing and encouraging sensationalist content to spread. Pre-social media crazy ideas were posted on blogs few people visited; they didn’t have algorithms pushing them to millions. As soon as we stopped being humans and started being a vehicle to deliver ads things went south. Data is part of what makes you more valuable to advertisers but it’s not the root problem.
