I can agree with this statement. It seems logical and rational; however, I’m going to play devils advocate.
First, what is Ryder implying by ‘human rights’? If it’s referring to the treatment we share with other humans (kindness, compassion, etc) then sure I can see it. However, this statement assumes that we know what’s best for other species, which is incorrect. Example, most people are against trophy hunting as it appears to be one of the lowest expression of human indulgence, but when you take a closer look at the act it gets a lot more complicated. Long story short: trophy hunting is actually one of the best ways to keep species from extinction. It provides money for animal conservation and anti-poaching efforts and gives younger animals a chance to thrive. This is far away from ‘human rights’ that Ryder refers to.
Second, this statement assumes that we know what pain is to other animals. Humans tend to feel pain in many ways, but the emotion that comes with physical pain could be uniquely human. I’m going to put scenario forward and give three perspectives. Scenario: wolves rip open the belly of an elk as they are tracking it down in yellow stone park as humans watch. Human perspective: poor elk must be in a lot of pain as it’s running away from the wolves with its guts out. The elk is probably a father and a husband. Wolves: let’s keep up the chase. We have not eaten in months and our last litter died. Elk: if only I could out run these critters.
I have no idea what an elk is thinking or what the wolves are thinking either. But I am certain that they are not feeling the same emotions we are. If they were, the wolves would stop killing elk and any other animal for that matter and probably die as a species. And by the same token, elk would be sacrificing themselves to give wolves something to eat and not suffer. Point is, reality and nature are way more complicated than this simple statement.
