This is good news for many reasons beyond environmental progress and energy independence. One of the issues holding back countries like Kenya is unstable infrastructure- in this case, a reliable power grid. Making blackouts a thing of the past will make foreign investment much less hesitant toward developing (literally) power-hungry industries. Continuing to diversify the economy beyond agriculture and tourism is one of the many ways to help grow the middle class. Living in Nairobi from 2013-14 (and attending the East Africa Energy Conference in 2014), I had hope in these initiatives that, at the time, felt so far off. There is still much to be done, but this is great news.
