M-Kopa is a dying industry as most people had the money for first time connections but rarely for follow ups. The business which was foreign funded is running into debt because it was really an unsustainable model.

Currently, only 50ish % of the population is connected to the grid and even with that, power outages aren't that rare. Every dry season we get power rationing since half the grid relies on Hydro.
China was planning to build a coal plant which would have added 200% of the MW capacity we have, to the grid but it was rightfully stopped.
Nuclear energy is still a dream and I would generally not trust the government with that amount of money/debt because it would double the cost and still steal most of it.
