To see the effect, switch on the camera on your phone and aim a remote control at it. When you press a button on the remote you will see a flash of light on the screen from the infrared diode on the remote, but the flash is not visible to the naked eye. This is just an opening shot in the arms race between the facial recognition software manufacturers and people who want to stay anonymous. I'm sure the next step will be for the software manufacturers to have a subroutine which will detect IR dazzlers or disruptive makeup and alert the people monitoring the CCTV. Perhaps it will follow them as they travel around the surveillance area.
