One of my best friends worked as a volunteer at one of these camps. They never encountered poachers but did encounter looters, one of the "Farms" were raided by local bandits and he and his entourage had to get ready to shoot on sight. He lied for days in a ditch with googles and a weapon. He was working at one of the safer sites and wasn't on demand duty or patrol duty. He was essentially just a glorified bodyguard of the owners. Though he got to wrestle with tigers (he has scars) and feed newborn lions. He told me that the personell who were on patrol duty or deployment were in several shoot outs a year, and they shot to kill. It's a crazy world where intelligent apes have to defend endangered, peaceful and inedible wildlife from lesser intelligent apes wanting to kill them for their bones and skin. But I'm glad there exists a lot of people willing to take on that duty, they're the real superheroes.
