Why not? It takes human error and our comparatively slow reaction time out of the equation. There will be fewer accidents. It allows people to use the time they have to spend on the road to do something more productive. Vehicles could communicate with one another to optimize the use of the road and reduce traffic jams. Older people who can’t drive anymore would regain some autonomy. So would people with disabilities. So would people who are too young to drive. Taxis would become much cheaper, so fewer people would need to buy a car. In fact, I don’t see what would be lost apart from the pleasure of operating a vehicle. I don’t believe that most people care about this and that number should decrease steadily as the benefits of autonomous vehicles become obvious to an overwhelming majority of the population.
