Not an expert on the topic of genetic engineering but I explain it to myself with a little kitchen metaphor.
Imagine you have a kitchen. A decrease in biodiversity than is like you have a smaller number of ingredients even if you have more of each of the remaining ingredients. Imagine you want to make something like pan cakes but you are missing eggs. Regardless of the amount of sugar and milk in your kitchen you'll still not be able to make pan cakes...
Sorry for the really blunt metaphor.
